Cruise Drink Package

Should You Get the Drink Package on a Cruise? Here's What You Need to Know

A cruise vacation is all about unwinding, enjoying the scenery, and indulging in delicious food and drinks. When booking your trip, you’ll likely encounter the option to purchase a drink package—a prepaid plan that allows you access to a range of beverages throughout your cruise. But is it worth it? Let’s break it down.

I want to start by saying that each cruise line is different and depending on the type of booking you have, you may be able to include a drink package. Best example is when sailing with Princess Cruises. I always recommend the Princess Plus or Princess Premier packages. Check out my post on Princess Cruises to learn about their pricing. MSC Cruises also offers a Drinks and WiFi package to be added to your booking which can be as low as an additional $200 to your cabin. I will break down each cruise line's pricing in a different post, so be sure to check that out as well. For now, let's talk in general terms.

What’s Included in a Cruise Drink Package?

Drink packages vary by cruise line but typically fall into a few categories:

  1. Alcoholic Beverage Packages: Cover beer, wine, cocktails, and sometimes premium liquors.

  2. Non-Alcoholic Packages: Include soda, specialty coffee, mocktails, and bottled water.

  3. Combination Packages: Offer both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

Each package is priced per person, per day, and often includes gratuities. The specifics vary, so always check what’s covered before purchasing.

Benefits of a Drink Package

  1. Convenience: With a drink package, you won’t need to worry about tracking your onboard spending or calculating tips for every drink order. You can enjoy your vacation stress-free.

  2. Cost Savings for Frequent Drinkers: If you plan to enjoy multiple cocktails by the pool, a glass of wine with dinner, and perhaps a nightcap, a drink package could save you money compared to paying per drink.

  3. Variety: Drink packages often include a wide selection, letting you try different beverages without worrying about individual costs.

  4. All-Inclusive Feel: For many cruisers, a drink package adds to the carefree vibe of a cruise, knowing everything is already paid for.

Potential Downsides

  1. High Upfront Cost: Drink packages can add hundreds of dollars to your cruise fare, especially on longer itineraries. If you’re not a heavy drinker, this might not be worth it.

  2. Daily Limits: Some packages come with restrictions, like a maximum number of drinks per day or exclusions on premium liquors or specialty cocktails.

  3. Sharing Prohibited: Drink packages are priced per person, and sharing with others is not allowed. Everyone in the same cabin over the age of 21 will be required to purchase the drink package.

  4. Port Days: When you’re off the ship exploring, you won’t be using the drink package, potentially lowering its value.

Who Should Get the Drink Package?

  • Frequent Drinkers: If you enjoy multiple alcoholic beverages daily, the package could save you money.

  • Coffee or Soda Lovers: If you drink specialty coffees, sodas, or smoothies regularly, a non-alcoholic package may be worth it. Keep in mind that Starbucks is not included in the drink package onboard the ships that have Starbucks kiosks.

  • Those Who Value Simplicity: If budgeting or tracking expenses stresses you out, a drink package offers peace of mind.

Who Should Skip It?

  • Occasional Drinkers: If you only have a drink with dinner or prefer complimentary options like water, tea, and basic coffee, you’re better off skipping the package. Also, keep in mind that many cruise lines allow you to take a bottle of wine onboard on embarkation day, so you can bring your favorite bottle onboard and enjoy it during your cruise.

  • Explorers: If you plan to spend most of your days in port, you might not take full advantage of the package. This is especially true on Mediterranean cruises and Alaska cruises if you plan to take an excursion during all your port days.

  • Families with Kids: For families, kids’ drink packages (for soda or juice) are often more economical than full drink packages.

Tips for Deciding

  1. Do the Math: Check the package cost and compare it to your estimated daily drink consumption. Most alcoholic drinks onboard cost $10–$15, so if you plan to drink 5+ a day, it might be worth it.

  2. Look for Discounts: Some cruise lines offer drink package discounts if you book in advance or during promotions. Check out my post on Cruise Line Drink Packages for more information on pricing.

  3. Check Your Itinerary: On port-heavy cruises, you may spend more time off the ship, reducing your opportunity to use the package.

  4. Consider Alternatives: Some cruise lines allow you to bring a bottle of wine or champagne onboard, or you can purchase drinks à la carte. Keep in mind that during your meals in the dining hall and in the buffet you will have complimentary water and other drinks such as iced tea and lemonade.

  5. Know The Cruise Line: Not all cruise lines are the same. Soda is included on Disney Cruises, because, of course, we want the kids to enjoy as much soda as they want! On Virgin Voyages they do not offer drink packages and basic beverages such as water, soda, iced tea and lemonade is included. MSC does not allow you to bring any alcohol onboard, including wine or champagne. I go through each major cruise line in my Cruise Line Pricing and Beverages post so be sure to check it out.

Final Thoughts

A drink package can enhance your cruise experience, but it’s not for everyone. Carefully consider your drinking habits, itinerary, and budget before making a decision. Whether you choose to indulge in a package or pay as you go, remember that the best part of a cruise is enjoying it your way—cheers to that!
